Extraordinary Great Grandmothers

When we’re young we take it for granted that Mum will look after us, cook, clean, wash, iron, discipline us, pick up the pieces, taxi us around... the list is endless. So what do mothers do when their kids leave home? They can sit back and enjoy a life less busy, right?
Well that’s not the case for many mothers these days. There will be mothers who babysit their grandchildren so that their own children can afford to work, some may start a new career once the pressure of home life quietens and the financial burden lessens and others may be working hard to save for their retirement. So when grandmothers reach the next milestone and become great grandmothers, surely they can sit back and enjoy a quieter life then, right? Well not in our family, here’s what my Mum and Mother-in-Law are up to:
She won the award ‘Unsung Hero of the Year’ at the age of 79, working as a volunteer for Queen Alexander Hospital in Portsmouth. Everybody at the QA knows and loves my mum, Marge, with her red hair and friendly disposition. She has always worked full-time, raising four children on her own and is now a grandmother and great grandmother. Now at the age of 80 she is writing a book and still works at the hospital, she jogs 7 miles 2-3 times a week, is a big Man United fan and is still hopeful that she’ll meet her Johnny Depp! She drives me mad at times and we don’t always see eye to eye but we do laugh together, she is a character, an inspiration and I’m proud to say that she’s my Mum.
My Mother-in-Law is also very special and a much loved woman. Also mum to four, she is a grandmother and great grandmother many times over. She has run a village store and post office in Castle Carrock, Cumbria for 48 years, never taking more than 2 days off for a short break. At 81, she shows no signs of closing the store, she’s always interested in others, is a great cook and very talented baker (so much so that you always leave her house a size bigger than you went in!). She has also just celebrated her diamond wedding anniversary! Everybody loves Margaret.
Both Marge and Margaret are extraordinary great grandmothers and an inspiration to others. So, along with the team at Premurosa, I would like to wish a very Happy Mother's Day to every mother, grandmother and great grandmother, especially the extraordinary ones!
Mothering Sunday is 15th March.
